Species density table
Weight per board foot varies almost two-fold across common species: <strong>white pine ≈ 2.9, treated pine ≈ 3.8 (the treatment adds weight), red oak ≈ 4.2, white oak ≈ 4.7 lbs per board foot</strong>. The calculator uses pine by default — set 2.9 for SPF framing, 4.7 for white oak furniture stock.
Practical uses for the number
Trailer payload is the everyday one: 200 board feet of treated lumber approaches 800 lbs wet. Furniture and shelving design cares about dry weight on wall anchors, and shipping quotes for hardwood orders are weight-based.
